In times of old, The Furies protected Mother Right. If a mother (or any woman) was harmed, The Furies swooped down and took their vengeance. They were one of the last vestiges of a world that existed before the patriarchy. When we feel righteous anger, it is The Furies who are calling out to us to make what is wrong right again.

Why People Didn't Leave

Why didn't everyone leave when they were told a cat five hurricane was coming their way? Some people were afflicted with a bit of hubris: "we lived through Camille; we can live through this." And some tourists had the misfortune of getting trapped in New Orleans (and other places) before the storm. However, many many poor people live in New Orleans (and Mississippi). Many people had no cars to get out of town—and no money to buy tickets on other modes of transportation to get out of town. (This is why the city or state governments should have bussed people out of the city earlier, in my humble opinion.) As one reporter pointed out, it was near the end of the month when Katrina hit. Many people who are living paycheck to paycheck had run out of money. If they had a car, they might not have had money to buy gas.

Poverty. It is alive and well in America.
