In times of old, The Furies protected Mother Right. If a mother (or any woman) was harmed, The Furies swooped down and took their vengeance. They were one of the last vestiges of a world that existed before the patriarchy. When we feel righteous anger, it is The Furies who are calling out to us to make what is wrong right again.

What About the Women?
So why isn't anyone talking about what's happening to the women in Iraq? Well, lots of people are talking about it but is anyone doing anything about it? It's so fucking depressing. I feel for my sisters in Iraq. This is what the fundamentalists around the world want: women with no legal (or any other kind of) power. Under Saddam Hussein, a freaking dictator, women had more rights than they do now or will under this new constitution. The new constitution could quite possible adopt law which would bring back "beatings, stoning, flogging and forced veiling" of women, as well as forced marriage for girls. The Organization of Women's Freedom in Iraq asks us to "Write open letters to the US administration, to its allies, and especially to the UN. Remind them that women’s rights cannot be the price for a hideous democracy of racism, ethnicity, religiosity, sectarianism and misogyny."
And don't forget the "detainees" in Cuba and Iraq. Most of these people have not done anything wrong, and they've been in prisons for years, paid for by our tax dollars. Raed in the Middle has some good info and links in this post about who to contact. I think we should all be writing letters every week to help get these people released.
It's very sad, very depressing, very disheartening what is happening in the world right now. When I read about the permafrost in Siberia melting (which will probably cause the release of methane which will accelerate global warming), I just had no words for my sorrow—it was so unnecessary for us to destroy our world. Yet here it is happening and yet we seem paralyzed to do anything. It feels as though there is so little we can do, but look at Cindy Sheehan. She's one woman, one woman who is free to express herself and her sorrow. She may not stop the war, but perhaps she is opening up the minds and hearts of some of middle America. And maybe some boys and girls thinking of signing up to go off to war might have second thoughts and walk away. She may be saving lots of lives. What can each of us do? 0 commentsAll photographs and written material copyright © 2003-2008 by Kim Antieau unless otherwise indicated. May not be used without permission.
