In times of old, The Furies protected Mother Right. If a mother (or any woman) was harmed, The Furies swooped down and took their vengeance. They were one of the last vestiges of a world that existed before the patriarchy. When we feel righteous anger, it is The Furies who are calling out to us to make what is wrong right again.

Power of the People 

Wangari Maathai accepted her Nobel Peace Prize yesterday. If you get a chance to see her give the speech, take it. (If you don't have Real Player, you can click on the transcript of the speech and read it instead, but listening to her and seeing her is good medicine.) She is gorgeous, dressed in orange, a goddess supreme. She gives the speech in English. For 30 years she has been planting trees in Africa. Never doubt the ability of one person to make a difference. There can be no peace, she says, without a sustainable environment. She warns that current global consumption is not sustainable.

Speaking of something you should see, try to watch Rumsfeld being questioned by the soldiers in Kuwait—the whole thing. It is something to behold. Again, never estimate the power of one person to create change. Since this episode between Rumsfeld and the soldiers the Pentagon has asked for more armored vehicles (POPUP). The soldiers said they had to dig around in refuse piles to outfit their vehicles. Rumsfeld's response was that you could have all the armor you wanted and your vehicle could still get blown up. Can you imagine? He also said you go to war with the army you got. Well, I guess we kind of went to war with the Secretary of Defense we got. Geez Louise.
