In times of old, The Furies protected Mother Right. If a mother (or any woman) was harmed, The Furies swooped down and took their vengeance. They were one of the last vestiges of a world that existed before the patriarchy. When we feel righteous anger, it is The Furies who are calling out to us to make what is wrong right again.

Coming Down the Mountain...

So I was winding through the orchards of Hood River, coming off the foothills of the foothills of the toenails of Mount Hood after my interview with Mr. Concannon, listening to NPR, when I hear this report about some Bishop in Colorado who is now saying that not only will he refuse to give communion to any politician who is pro-choice, pro-stem cell research, pro-gay marriage, but anyone who VOTES for a politician who is any of those things is a sinner and cannot receive communion until s/he goes to confession and repents. I just about lost my mind right then and there. The Catholic Church, which is in medias res of a sexual abuse scandal, is trying to influence an American election? When I told my husband this story, he said, "So if you're raping children you can get communion but not if you vote for Kerry?" Apparently. I called my father who has probably gone to church—a Catholic church—nearly every Sunday of his life. We talked about this subject for a long time. Finally, I said, "The Catholic Church is essentially saying it's a sin to vote for John Kerry. If you vote for John Kerry, will you feel like you've sinned?" He paused for a moment, then said, "If I thought anything about, I'd think it would be a bigger sin to vote for George Bush."

I'm with you there, Dad.

I shall write more on this later. 0 comments
